Maintaining Spiritual Health for Conscious Living


In recent years researchers have started looking at the effect of belief systems on human health. Although there are many factors involved, numerous studies have found a positive connection between depth of religious or spiritual belief and good health.

  • Studies have found that people who attend church frequently and for whom religion is of major importance in their lives have lower blood pressure than those who attend church infrequently and for whom religion is of less importance.
  • People who are very religious are less likely than their less religious counterparts to have had a myocardial infarction (heart attack).
  • Religious beliefs and practice can predict improved physical functioning, enhanced adherence to medical regimens, higher self-esteem, and diminished anxiety and health worries for people who have had invasive surgery.
  • Lower cancer mortality rates have been found in those counties in the United States that have relatively high levels of religious group membership. Certain religious faiths, such as Mormons or Seventh-day Adventists, also have markedly lower rates of heart disease and all-cause mortality.
  • Studies show that people who are religious perceive their health to be better than people who report no religious affiliation, and the former tend to use fewer health care resources and spend fewer days in the hospital than other groups.
  • Greater frequency of religious/spiritual worship and practices are related to a decrease in disability as well as a decrease in the perception of disability among elderly living in nursing homes.
  • Caregivers of patients with serious illnesses like Alzheimer's Disease who use religious practices as a means of coping report greater wellbeing and decreased stress than those caregivers who are not religious.
  • Spiritually focused interventions, such as meditation, have been associated with lower mortality from coronary artery disease as well as reduced risk of both fatal and non-fatal repeat heart attacks, and increased longevity for breast cancer patients.
